As the result of ongoing erosion in the bottom of the shoreline embankment and global failure of a section of a 9-meter-high slope, a part of Hedge Road in the Town of Georgina was at risk. Collaborating with the Town, various contractors, consultants, and suppliers, Tatham developed a multi-phase 10-year shoreline protection plan to mitigate these risks with various slope stabilization measures.

After conducting a slope stability assessment based on geotechnical investigation, coastal wave analysis, and topographical survey, preliminary and detailed designs were developed for areas where slopes had failed or were at risk of failure. With private residences located directly south of the road allowance and lakeshore access along the banks north of the road, public engagement and effective communication with impacted landowners was essential.

Tatham’s Coastal and Land Development teams, alongside Envision-Tatham, worked together to design, develop, and administer a construction plan that included the addition of a rock revetment, vegetated slope stabilization, and a 9-meter-high mechanically stabilized embankment slope complete with vegetated façade.

The first phase of these shoreline stabilization works was the largest project in Lake Simcoe in 2023.
