Working closely with the County of Simcoe, Tatham provided detailed design and construction services for a 537-metre section of County Road 9, located west of Creemore. The location of this section of road presented a unique set of challenges, with Noisy River to the south and steep, forested slopes to the north. With numerous horizontal and vertical curves, this section had been prone to recurring landslides and washouts, in addition to persistent icing in the wintertime due to inadequate surface drainage.
Our Transportation team provided a comprehensive series of improvements, including widening the road through cut-and-fill operations, reinforcing the riverbank with a large-diameter buttress stone, and implementing a state-of-the-art slope stabilization system. This system utilized drilled hollow injection bars and high-strength steel mesh (typically reserved for stabilizing rock faces), combined with a Filtrexx living wall system for vegetation.
Drainage upgrades were also a central component of the project. This included the installation of new concrete curb and gutter, the enlargement of culverts, and creation of new roadside ditches to improve water runoff management.
Additionally, the road makeup was reconstructed and a new steel beam guide rail was installed. These improvements will significantly increase the long-term durability of this section of Country Road 9, addressing the erosion and drainage challenges that have historically affected the area, providing safer, more reliable route for travelers.
