Tatham was contracted by the Town of Bracebridge to complete the Municipal Class Environmental Assessment and oversee the preliminary and final design for the replacement of a single-lane concrete T-girder bridge.
Crossing the Black River, the original bridge dated back to 1918, spanning 10.2 meters with a width of 4.9 meters. In 2013, a significant rain event flooded the channel and washed out much of the approach roads.
Our team completed a hydraulic model to analyze the existing and projected flows through the structure, including jamming analysis, as flooding due to ice is known to be a problem at this location.
In the preliminary design report, alternative structures and barriers were presented and reviewed. The final design involved the permanent realignment of the road to improve the adjacent intersection, the removal of the existing bridge, channel improvements, the design of new reinforced concrete abutments anchored in bedrock, and the installation of a 27.4-meter Mabey Compact 200 panel bridge.
