To keep energy costs low at the plant, our Mechanical team designed a heating system to run on natural gas. The use of gas fired unit heaters in sewage treatment plants can only be considered for areas where there is no possibility of developing a hazardous atmosphere from treatment processes. The tertiary filters, chemical storage and mixing areas, electrical and diesel generator rooms and operations office were all grouped together in a non-hazardous classified building, permitting the use of economical natural gas heat. The newly designed heating system included natural gas-fired, fan-forced unit heaters controlled by electronic thermostats. Specialized ventilation was designed for diesel generator and chemical storage and feed areas.
