Tatham Engineering was retained to review the hydraulic capacity of twin 1.8 metre diameter CSP culverts immediately downstream of a Trent Severn Waterway Dam on 6 Mile Lake.
The culverts were found to be severely deteriorated and analysis showed they were significantly undersized for the volume of water released through the dam every spring, which caused embankment erosion and over topping of the road.
To increase the hydraulic capacity, a 4.3 metre x 2.4 metre open bottom precast concrete culvert on cast in place footings was designed. Wingwalls were also incorporated to improve the protection and stability of the upstream and downstream road embankments.
