Tatham Engineering was retained by the City of Orillia to provide engineering design and construction services to improve the Highway 11/12 interchange with Old Barrie Road in support of continued development in the Orillia West area. As a junction of local and provincial roads, the project required coordination with, and approvals from, MTO. Similarly, coordination with several utility agencies was required to relocated above and below ground services.
To address safety, geometric and operational issues, the intersection of Old Barrie Road with the Highway 11 SB ramps was realigned and reconfigured, complete with exclusive turn lanes and traffic signal control. The adjacent Harvie Settlement Road intersection, located 50 metes to the west, was closed to eliminate conflicts between intersections. An eastbound left turn lane was also introduced on Highway 12 at its intersection with Mississaga Street, as was a 3 metre multi-use trail through the project limits, in order to provide improved connectivity across Highway 12 and to the Rotary Place sports complex and Lakehead University. The latter required a reconfiguration of the Highway 11 overpass to accommodate the trail and implementation of bicycle signals, a first for the City, at Mississaga Street.
