The Lake Dalrymple Bridge on Kawartha Lakes Road 6 serves as a vital connection for residents, cottagers and visitors in the City of Kawartha Lakes. After more than 50 years of service, the aging five-span timber bridge required replacement to ensure the safety, reliability and long-term sustainability of this important transportation link.
Tatham Engineering was retained to lead the bridge replacement from planning and design through construction. Our multidisciplinary team provided preliminary and detailed design, geotechnical investigation, LiDAR topographic surveying, hydrology and hydraulics analysis, and comprehensive construction administration and inspection services.
To address site constraints while enhancing environmental protection, Tatham designed a 33-metre clear-span NU girder bridge that eliminates the need for in-water piers. This solution improves navigation through the channel, protects aquatic habitat, and reduces long-term impacts on the surrounding ecosystem.
Construction techniques, including the use of stay-in-place partial-depth precast deck panels, enhanced durability, improved constructability, and accelerated project delivery for the community.
Further enhancing the bridge’s sustainability, the design incorporated solar-powered lighting on the bridge and approaches, lowering capital costs while eliminating ongoing utility service fees.
