When a road collapsed over an aging culvert on Gross Road in the Township of Muskoka Lakes, it created an urgent safety issue that required immediate action. The culvert was already scheduled for replacement, but the failure accelerated the timeline and increased the urgency.
Tatham’s Bridges team quickly mobilized to assess the site and advance the culvert replacement design. The new structure consisted of three 3.6 m diameter corrugated steel pipes. Because the roadway had limited cover above the pipes, a concrete slab was added to safely distribute traffic loads across the culvert. During construction, the pipes were temporarily braced to maintain their shape as backfill was placed, helping ensure the structure performed as designed.
The Township procured the culvert pipes directly and provided them to the contractor, an arrangement that helped compress the overall delivery schedule. Design, tendering, and construction were advanced under an accelerated timeline.
