It was a busy and rewarding day for a group of Tatham staff who volunteered to assist Georgian Bay Land Trust with invasive species management along Twelve Mile Bay Road in MacTier, Ontario.
Putting Tatham’s motto, Enhancing Our Communities, into action, the group got their hands dirty cutting, gathering, and stacking Phragmites.
This aggressive perennial grass spreads quickly, out-competes native species for water and nutrients, and can displace turtles and other animals. When cut, the phragmites will grow back smaller and more sparse, until eventually there is no regrowth and the habitat can be restored.
