On Wednesday May 11, Tatham Engineering staff partnered with the Nottawasaga Valley Conservation Authority (NVCA) to plant 380 trees/shrubs in Singhampton, Ontario. We had a beautiful sunny day along the riverside with warm temperatures of 28°C. We collectively planted the following along the headwaters of the Pretty River:

50 White Pine
60 White Spruce
60 White Cedar
50 Tamarak
60 Silver Maple
30 Highbush Cranberry
30 Nannyberry
40 Red Osier Dogwood

These plantings will provide numerous benefits to the watershed for generations to come, including erosion protection, decreasing water temperature with increased shade, improvement to water quality by filtering sediment and excess nutrients, provide food and habitat for fish and animals, and capture carbon. Plantings were outfitted with stakes, tree tubes, and brush mats, as required for each young species to protect them from the environment and predators during growth.

This event is one of many held annually as part of NVCA’s program to provide tree planting services to landowners throughout the watershed. The NVCA is always looking for new stewardship project sites to help improve the watershed. If you, or someone you know, owns property or is interested in a stream-side plant, habitat restoration, river rehabilitation, or water quality improvement project, please contact the NVCA. Sites are typically planned 6 to 12 months in advance and there are numerous grants available for landowners to benefit from while improving the environment. These are opportunities for both private and public property, so they recommend connecting your clients with the NVCA if there is a naturalized landscaping component required for the client’s projects.

Tatham is proud to support the communities in which we live and work. As part of Tatham’s philosophy to enhance our communities, not only in the work we do, but the actions that we take, staff are annually provided one day of paid volunteer hours for volunteering with our local communities. Tatham staff were excited to join in this opportunity and to sport our new Team Tatham event t-shirts.

A huge thank you to all the volunteers!
